BRIEF:

Located just outside the Kruger National Park, Shiviko Lodge, overlooking the Sabie River, is a luxurious modern retreat nestled within the Elephant Point development. The lodge spans an impressive 2500 sqm and was designed by BLOC Architects to blend contemporary architecture with its natural surroundings. The sleek, minimalist structure is contrasted by natural stone cladding, burnt black wood, and landscaped rooftops, providing a seamless integration with the environment.

Akara Design Studio was responsible for the full interior architecture, décor, and custom furniture design. The project included detailed space planning, the selection of fittings and fixtures, decorative lighting, and bespoke cabinetry. With a focus on local craftsmanship and materials, Akara curated custom furniture for each of the four villas, while carefully integrating subtle cultural elements from various South African traditional groups. Through textures, colours, and symbolic décor, Akara told a story of heritage, enhancing the lodge’s modern, luxurious feel.

In addition to interior architecture, the scope included tile and wall finish selection, bathroom vanities, and coordinating electrical and plumbing layouts. Each villa’s design reflects the surrounding landscape, blending neutral tones with bold accents of local art and craftwork. Custom-made furniture and commissioned art pieces added a personal touch, ensuring each space provides guests with a unique and immersive experience.

This project involved extensive collaboration with local suppliers and required detailed technical drawings and specifications, taking 15 months to complete.
